Red doors are a tradition in many Episcopal churches and have multiple symbolic meanings: Sanctuary: In the Middle Ages, red doors indicated a place of refuge and protection. Christ’s sacrifice: The color red represents the blood of Christ and his sacrifice for humanity.

Like many churches, Episcopal parishes use red to let the world know what we’re about. Red is the color of Christ’s blood. It is the symbol of the sacrifice of the martyrs. It is the presence of the Holy Spirit. And it marks the holy ground that lies just beyond its doors. We like to think that red tells the world we’re a safe place. We’re a peaceful place. We’re a place of refuge.. The door of our church is red. Why? In my research in our church’s historical records, up to this point, I have found no explanation about why our church’s door is red.
